🦋 IC Information

Character Name: Isabel Knight
Age: 17
Canon: Mage: the Ascension
Canon Point: Right before she graduates from high school.
Character History: Don't call her Izzy...
Canon Abilities: In Mage, the Ascension, magic is governed by Spheres (link). There are 9 total, but most mages don't have all 9. Each level in a Sphere encompasses the level beneath it.

Correspondence 2: Sense Space, Touch Space

Forces 2: Control Forces

Life 3: Alter Simple Patterns, Heal Self (This cannot remove any Fae traits she picks up. At best, Isabel would only be able to camouflage them for a time.)

Matter 2: Basic Transmutation

Mind 4: Control Conscious Mind, Astral Projection

Prime 3: Channel Quintessence, Sublimate Quintessential Matter and Forces, Activate Quintessential Life, Enchant Life

Time 3: Time Manipulation

There are far more specialized Rotes that can be performed, but this is a generic overview.

More importantly, there's a sort of system of checks and balances that Reality puts in place. Basically, when a mage exerts the force of magick to change the world in spectacular ways, he violates the accepted nature of reality, and a Paradox results. Often the result ranges from inconvenient side-effects to disaster.

Worse, since mages recognize the mutable vision of reality, it's possible for them to become lost in a world of their own creation. Sometimes it's difficult to separate truth from fancy or magic from the mundane. In severe cases, when a mage's senses are overcome, he withdraws from reality and becomes lost in his own magickal world. Although some may mistake this state for insanity, mages recognize it as the victim's mind being overcome with the grandeur of the Tapestry and the power of possibility. Such a state is called Quiet.

A mage in Quiet sees or hears things that aren't there, becomes obsessed or withdrawn or otherwise suffers a shift in personality. Quiets don't strike with any predictable regularity. Rather, they tend to result from extremely bad Paradox Backlashes or magickal trauma.

Isabel is also an accomplished martial artist, and practices a style called simply "Do" -- the Way -- which is an ancient Akashic martial art of unsurpassed skill and elegance. While she does have training in judo as well, training in Do replaces what she learned, essentially.

Maybe because her father isn't (Morgan is very oblivious), Isabel has tried very hard to cultivate both her intuition and her observant tendencies. She has no empathy like her mother--no psychic ability to feel others' emotions as if they were her own (her mother, Carolyn, has that gift), but Isabel has tried very hard to learn to read people's body language and see beyond what they say to the nuances beneath. While she can mimic the psychic ability with the Mind Sphere, she usually doesn't. (As for the basic capacity for empathy? Isabel does possess that.)

Inventory: What items does your character have with them? Jeans, sneakers, a bright green t-shirt that says "Trouble Finds Me", and a pair of emerald stud earrings.

🦋 Personality

Option 1: Answer the following questions. Elaborate on the answer, especially your character's thoughts and feelings surrounding the answer.

  1. Has your character always believed in magic? Do they have something influencing their perspective on the supernatural/metaphysical/spiritual from their past? How do they feel about magic?

  2. Isabel grew up on a nexus world with magic of its own. Being surrounded by Mages performing their own feats of magick, it would be difficult for Isabel to not believe in it. She hadn't particularly thought that she'd Awaken as a Mage herself--it's not a sure thing, and Isabel isn't sure why her family seems to have a proclivity for it. She has a few theories as to why, though.

Having been raised around the supernatural for her entire life, Isabel is a bit inured to it--it wasn't entirely strange to see things like dragons soaring overhead from time to time--or even seeing her werewolf grandfather shapeshift. Though having spent time on Earth as well, Isabel is well aware that isn't always the case. Considering magick was severely discouraged on Earth due to the possibility of Paradox, she can be a bit more careful than someone who was raised offworld entirely.

Isabel loves being a Mage and loves magick, but it's still nothing like a toy to be played with or something to be flaunted. It's a skill to be cultivated, like her ability to play music or sing, and it can be a useful tool, but she never allows herself to forget that in some places, casually slinging magick around is incredibly unwise and potentially unsafe for herself and others.

  3. What mythological creature would your character most like to be? Which do they identify with? Which would they dread being?.
  4. Isabel would love to see herself as a qilin; they are one of the best parts of Eastern mythology, protective and peaceful, soothing and gentle. Isabel very much wants to be seen that way--she's been taught, and truly believes, that if you can't solve problems with your words and not resort to blows, you've already lost, and she'd believe that the qilin symbolizes that. Nominally, Isabel follows Buddhist principles, and in Buddhism lore, the qilin refuses to even step on a blade of grass, seeking to preserve all life. So much so that it conjures clouds to float above the earth. That's a little extra, in Isabel's mind--she couldn't do something like that normally, and get away with it, but she still thinks it's kind of cool.

She would dread being an oni; the demons of Eastern mythology, springing directly from the underworld of Yomi. They only exist to bring suffering, disease, and destruction; while on some level, Isabel understands that they need to exist for some reason, she does not like it, or them.Despite the fact that she was born with the proverbial silver spoon in her mouth, Isabel tries to not be greedy, so the notion that oni are embodiments of greed and negative forms of desire in Buddhism would make her averse to them, as well.

  5. What song would a siren sing to your character to lure them closer? Why?

  6. WATER ME DOWN by MILKBLOOD. Isabel is a very independent person, and the song refers to relying on oneself and not waiting for anyone to come and save them, and the insecurities that can come along with doing that. Though Isabel does not have too many confidence issues--she's had enough support from her family (especially her family) to believe in herself.

She's also the sort to refuse to apologize for showing her true emotions ("I'd rather lose control than keep it inside") and she refuses to repress herself ("Don't you water me down, down, down, down"). She does care about others' feelings, so she might hold herself back a tiny bit to spare them some discomfort.

Isabel has always felt that she's been extremely fortunate and gifted in her life--she doesn't feel guilty about it per se, but she feels as if it demands more of her than of someone who hasn't got as much as she does--she phrases it as "to those who have been given much, much is demanded of them." She just begins that ideal with herself--she has to work harder, not because she is starting from a setback, but from a surplus. She should not have to rely on others, when she can be self-reliant. (But Isabel isn't stupid, this isn't a perfect world, and sometimes, you have to ask for help. She isn't too good to do that, if she thinks it's necessary!)

As for the why? That song is definitely something that Isabel would feel called out by, seeing it as somewhat descriptive of her--she'd recognize herself in the words.

  7. If there's one person your character would follow to another realm, who would it be and why? If there's no one, state that and explain why.

  8. No one. Isabel has made friends, has loved ones and connections, but they are not strong enough for her to decide that she'd arbitrarily follow them to another realm. That, and she's been instilled with a sense of responsibility to others, like her younger siblings, that would have her be reluctant to simply drop everything she was involved in and go running off.

(Now, just being curious? Yeah, she'd go to another realm to see what was there. Especially if Isabel could be sure that her responsibilities were covered. Isabel can be headstrong, and she's been instilled with a healthy sense of adventure, if only from her family's stories, so far. She yearns to add to those stories, someday...)

There is another reason as to why Isabel would travel to another realm; being asked for aid by the people of said realm. Were she to be asked, she would go without hesitation. This ties back into her belief that she has been well gifted by life; to ignore pleas for help would be to squander the gifts she's been given, and also it would go against the Buddhist principles she at least nominally attempts to follow. (Isabel doesn't think she's a particularly good Buddhist; she is only a technical pacifist, as an example. Violence is distasteful, but sometimes it is necessary to prevent greater violence and harm, killing is a solution, but the most unfortunate one.) Isabel would see it as her duty to go, if she was called to another realm to aid it.

  9. What is your character's most outstanding personality trait, and why?

  10. Isabel's compassion is one of her most outstanding traits. She does not easily pity others, but she sees their suffering, and genuinely desires to do what she can to alleviate it. One of her driving goals is to change the world, in the hopes of making it better for everyone, and her compassion is one of the deep-rooted reasons as to why. Isabel does not want that in the hopes of gaining recognition or accolades, but simply because that way, things are better for everyone, suffering is lessened, and that way, everyone wins, in her seventeen-year old mind.

(Don't ask her how she plans to change the world, she hasn't thought that far yet.)

Unfortunately, it can also be stressful--some people do equate compassion solely to pity, and that earns Isabel their derision or ire. Not to mention some people would much prefer to keep someone like her at arm's length, or further. Though this can be emotionally exhausting, Isabel doesn't let things like that stop her from persevering.

  11. Your character gets to return home, but when they do they learn that they've been gone for hundreds of years. How do they react?

  12. Honestly, Isabel would be upset at first. Everyone she knew and loved, gone, just like that? Worst case scenario! But eventually, she'd get over it, and realize that none of her loved ones would want her to mourn them forever. She deserves her own life, so Isabel had better get on with it. She would, but it also would probably be very similar to what she'd been intending to do all along--serve humanity by striving to make the world a better place, in any way she could.

Though she'd probably try to find her family's descendants. Actually introducing herself to them might be a little too weird, though. Unless they, themselves, were Mages, too. It would be odd, then, but not beyond the realm of possibility there.

Really, Isabel would probably do her best to fall into a role like her grandfather, Drake, has, and work towards that. As a Mage, she can't be obvious about having magick, so she'd work behind the scenes, try to drop the right word in the right ear at the right time, and in doing so, make a more positive outcome for humanity and the world at large.
